Prayer Guide
Introduction
The skill we know as prayer can be very advantageous. By calling upon the Gods of Runescape, one can perform such acts as regeneration, superhuman strength and invulnerability to magic, combat and ranging. The ability to call upon these gods must be trained however, and that is the art of prayer. The higher your prayer level, the greater your advantages.
To use a prayer, open the prayer menu and a list of prayers will be shown. Click on the prayer you want to activate. If you want to turn it off again, simply click it one more time.
 |

 |
Prayer that is in use. |
 |
Prayer that you don't have the level to use. |
Each of the prayers can be turned on or off individually. When you use a prayer, you are given an advantage depending on the prayer you choose to use. However, you can only use one prayer for each category at a time. For instance you can have 'superhuman strength' (raises strength) and 'incredible reflexes' (raises attack) at the same time, but you cannot use 'improved reflexes' and 'incredible reflexes' simultaneously, since they both increase your attack.
 |
If you are just starting out in Prayer you may want to pay a visit to Yauchomi the Prayer Tutor in the church east of Lumbridge Castle to learn about the different kinds of bones as well as various other tips. |
Prayers
When using a prayer, your prayer level will slowly drain. When your prayer is drained to zero, all prayers will be deactivated and you will need to recharge at an altar (or use a potion) to use another prayer. The rate at which it drains depends on the prayer, and the equipment you are wearing.

The magic boosting prayers affect accuracy only, not max hit due to the spell damage limit.
Note that skill boosting prayers cannot be stacked; if you have a prayer that boosts magic by 15%, you cannot also turn on a prayer to boost it by 10%. Similarly, only one Protect prayer can be on at a time.
Higher prayer gives the advantage of being able to use prayers for longer periods of time, an advantage that is invaluable when it comes to dueling, player killing and training.
Protection Prayers
The 3 protection prayers (Protect from Melee, Protect from Missiles and Protect from Magic) are very important. They allow you 100% protection from NPC attacks. When in use, a little icon will appear above your head.
These prayers can be invaluable when you are in a tight spot, or when you are training. A good training technique against high level monsters that tyhttp://www.money-runescape.net/pically do a lot of damage is to wield equipment that gives excellent prayer bonuses such as a mace, Monk's robes and a Holy symbol, and use Protect against melee. Your prayer will drain quite slowly and last a while. Bring prayer potions to keep your prayer from draining totally.
However, in the wilderness and the dueling arena, the protection prayers work differently. Instead of 100% protection, they protect you 50%, while raising the amount of times you block your opponent's attack. They are a great advantage, and can save your life in tight spots.
Restoring Prayer Points
There are a few ways to recharge your prayer points when they have run out. The normal solution is simply to find an altar. Altars are found all over the map, mainly in churches.
Players with level 31 Prayer have the advantage of using the altar in the Monastery, where you can pray to get an additional 2 Prayer levels to fend off drain. This boost is also available at the Nature Spirit altar in the Grotto of Mort Myre Swamp. Praying at the shrine from the Spirits of the Elid quest restores not only your regular prayer points, but gives a temporary hit point boost.

Members have several portable solutions. Using a Prayer or Super Stat Restore potion recharges around 33% of your Prayer per dose. Jangerberries restore only 1 prayer point, but also have other effects.

Training Methods
Prayer is by far the hardest skill to train up. Each of the "old" skills boasted at least one level 99 before someone finally reached 99 prayer. To help you out, we've listed a few of the best places to train.
The best place is without doubt the Wilderness bone respawn. Go north from Varrock and stop at around level 26-27. There are 25+ normal Bones respawns, 6 Big bones respawns, and also some skeletons you can kill just for the fun of it. A bit more south there is the chaos temple, where you can find 15 bone spawns and an altar as well. Green dragons in the level 13 wilderness northwest of Edgeville are good and fast exp since they are lower levels than blue dragons, and are close to a bank.
If you don't like the Wilderness, the Edgeville Dungeon Hill giants are also good. They drop Big bones, and are the best in F2P. In P2P, some good places include the Blue and Baby blue dragons in the Taverly members dungeon and the Ogres in the Blood rune chest dungeon (northwest of Ardougne). Another good choice in P2P is cremating shades in Mort'ton. You get good experience from cremating shades there, and you'll get a lot of good rewards using the chest keys, too. More information can be found in the Splitbark Armour Guide. Members have also found that the use of a Home Chapel Altar
to sacrifice bones is the quickest method to level up.
Lower level members may also want to talk to the Wise Old Man of Draynor Village for experience. He gives you various tasks and for some of them, you receive prayer experience. Although it won't be much: a maximum of 400. But hey, it's something. And keep in mind that he won't always reward you with prayer exp; he can also give you herbs, seeds, gems and runes.
Experience
To train prayer, all you have to do is bury bones. Formerly, you would be attacked by a Shade or Zombie about every 50 bones. However, Leo the Gravedigger has been added, and random events have become more ... random. The different types of bones are:

New higher experience bones were introduced for members in the Zogre Flesh Eater Quest. Kill Skogres (Skeletal Ogres) and Zogres (Zombie Ogres) to get Zogre bones and Ogre coffin keys. Use the Ogre coffin keys, or thieve the Ogre coffins (requires level 20 Thieving) to randomly get the higher level bones. The Zogre tomb map may be helpful.

As with normal bones you can use them to worship at the Ectofuntus or with a Home Chapel Altar to earn tons of experience!
Ecto-tokens (members only)
In the area of the Ghosts Ahoy quest (completion of the quest is not required), members can train prayer at the Ectofunctus using the same method that is used to get Ecto-tokens needed for the quest. The process is very simple, though tedious due to all of the walking, but the experience gained per bone is far greater than simply burying them. The items required are Pots, Buckets, any type of Bones, and your Ghostspeak amulet (obtained during the Restless Ghost quest). A filled Ectophial (Ghosts Ahoy quest reward) is also helpful to save some walking.
Just to the north of Port Phasmatys (located East of Canifis in the Haunted Woods) is a tower. Located in the centre of this tower is the "Ectofuntus". Prayer experience is gained by worshipping the Ectofuntus. To do this you must have a Pot of ground bones and a Bucket of slime (ectoplasm).
- Ground Bones
Upstairs on the north wall is a Bone grinder. First, use your bones with the bone grinder (be careful not to bury them instead!), then left click on the Grinder to "Wind" it, and finally right click on the grinder and select "Empty Grinder" or use an empty Pot on the grinder to fill it with ground bones (bone meal). Repeat this process for as many bones as you have.
- Bucket of slime (ectoplasm)
Back on the ground floor of the tower is a trapdoor. Go down the trap door and move to the far side of the circular tunnel to the stairs. Go down the stairs. Unless you have level 58 Agility and can use the Weathered Wall shortcut, you will need to repeat this process for two more levels to reach the pool of Slime at the bottom level. Use your empty Buckets on the pool of Slime to receive a Bucket of slime (ectoplasm). Now Empty your Ectophial to return to the ground floor.
- Worshipping
Refill your Ectophial and then left click on the Ectofuntus to worship it. This can be done twelve times before you have to talk to a Ghost Disciple to receive your Ecto-tokens. After doing so, continue worship.
Note that the Ghostspeak amulet must be worn at all times in order to speak with the ghosts (you must collect your tokens in order to continue). Ectofuntus gives 4 times the experience of just burying bones. Experience values for most bones are shown below, but the formula applies to all bones.

The whole process involves quite a bit of walking and so it's rather time consuming. Below is a good strategy to use to save some time. You will need to wear a Ghostspeak amulet and a Ring of dueling (enchanted emerald). Start by taking a filled Ectophial, nine Buckets, nine Pots and nine bones of your choosing.
- Teleport to the Ectofuntus temple by emptying your Ectophial.
- Use the Ectophial on the Ectofuntus to "recharge" it.
- Grind the bones in the bone grinder.
- Go down to the third level to fill up your buckets with Ectoplasm.
- Teleport back up to the top of the temple by emptying your Ectophial.
- Use the Ectophial on the Ectofuntus to "recharge" it.
- Worship the Ectofuntus nine times.
- Collect your Ecto-tokens from a Ghost Disciple.
- Operate your Ring of dueling and teleport to the Castle Wars arena. Bank. Repeat
Note : You can also fill your buckets before worshipping. Say you have 50 bones. Make 2 trips with 26 buckets, ectophial and dueling ring. Fill them all at the bottom. And then just grind and worship, so you don't have to walk down every time. You can do the same with grinding, but there the difference is way smaller because of the pots needed. You can find a stock of 100 buckets in the Port Phasmatys shop!
Home Chapel Altars (members only)
Player-owned houses have brought a new concept to Prayer - the home chapel. Depending on the type of altar built and the burners used, one can earn anywhere from 100% to 350% of the experience normally obtained for burying bones. 100% means exactly the same experience as just burying. Note that the highest possible level (350%) does not exceed the 400% from the ectofuntus - however, there is no tedious bucket hauling and bone grinding.
Getting the maximum prayer out of a home altar is dependent on using incense burners. (Mahogany and marble burners give the same bonus as the basic oak incense burner.) A single lit burner boosts the experience by another 50% of the normal amount; two lit burners increase the basic altar experience by an amount equal to the normal experience (100%). The information for each altar with or without burners is included in the table below. Burners are used by carrying two marrentill and a tinderbox with you, and simply clicking the burner. (Note that a lit burner has no "Light" option.) Then right click each bone and use it on the altar. Be careful not to bury them accidentally! In general, the burning marrentills give out around the time you arrive with another load of bones from the closest bank.

Ghasts (members only)
The only creatures in Runescape that can be slaughtered for immediate prayer experience (30 xp each) are level 30 Ghasts, located in Mort Myre Swamp. The Nature Spirit Quest is required to enter the Swamp and to obtain the proper equipment: the blessed Silver sickle(b) and a Druid pouch. Use the Silver sickle(b) to Cast-bloom (right-click the sickle while equipped or in inventory and select "Cast-bloom" or "Operate") while standing near rotten logs, branches or bushes in Mort Myre Swamp, causing Mort myre fungi, pears or branches to bloom. http://www.money-runescape.net/pick up these items. Click on your Druid pouch to Fill it with these items. When a Ghast attacks you (or you attack it), one item from your Druid pouch is automatically used up to make the Ghast solid and attackable. At 40 HP, they aren't hard to kill. The only drawback to training in Mort Myre Swamp is that when your Druid pouch is empty, attacking Ghasts will quickly rot your food. It is a good idea to keep the mushroom-shaped fungi so you can use them in Herblore.
Shade Cremating (members only)
By playing the Shades of Mort'ton (Splitbark Armour) mini game you can earn prayer experience, although it is rather slow but you can get some rewards in the process. You must have completed the Shades of Mort'ton Quest in order to play and it will also be useful to have completed the In Aid of the Myreque Quest so you can use the Burgh de Rott bank just south of Mort'ton.

Prayer books (members only)
Members can start collecting Prayer books by completing the Horror from the Deep Quest. Once you've completed the quest, you can choose between Saradomin, Guthix and Zamorak. Of course you can eventually get all three books, so you won't have to stay with the one you choose here, but we'll get back to that. When you first get the book it will just be called 'Damaged book'. When wielded (in the shield spot) it offers a +5 Prayer bonus.
You need to add 4 torn pages to your book to complete it. The pages are obtained from Treasure trails or by purchasing them from other players. You can get Torn pages from all three levels of Treasure Trails clue scrolls. Torn pages are uniquely named, numbered (1 through 4) and coloured to related to a god (Guthix, Saradomin or Zamorak). Look below to see which colours the different Gods have. When you get a page matching your book, just Use it on your Damaged book. If you wish to see which pages you're still missing, you can simply right click on your book, and choose 'check'.
When you've completed your first book (all four pages of the related god), you can go to Jossik at the first floor of the lighthouse north of the Barbarian Outpost and get another book of a different God. You need to have your first book completed though; he won't offer to sell you a new one unless you have the other(s) completed. A new book will cost you 5000 gp.
If you ever lose your book, visit Jossik. He will return it to you, with whatever pages it contained when you lost it.
A completed Prayer book containing all four torn pages has a different name: Book of balance (Guthix), Holy book (Saradomin), or Unholy book (Zamorak). It has Attack or Defence powers (see table below). Additional capabilities such as Preach, Blessing, Last Rites, and Wedding rites are available; using these temporarily drains your special attack. To use these you can either right-click the book in your inventory and select the "Preach" option, or you can right-click the book while it is equipped and select the "Operate" option. You can also use completed Prayer Books to bless silver symbols (see our Crafting Guide for more information) if your Prayer is level 50 or more. Guthix and Saradomin Prayer books can enchant Holy Symbols. Guthix and Zamorak Prayer books can enchant Unholy Symbols. Just Use the book on the related (strung) symbol. This costs 4 Prayer each time; prayer restoration (through using an altar or a potion) will be required.

Random Events
As with many skills there are random events to stop people from cheating. Details can be found in our Random Events guide and include Shades, Zombies and Leo the Gravedigger.
Cape of Achievement
Once you have mastered the skill and reached level 99 you may want to buy yourself a Prayer Cape from brother Jerred in the Monastery west of Edgeville. Refer to the Achievement Capes guide for more details.
